How we compare savings accounts
Every account listed here is insured by the FDIC or NCUA up to the standard limit. We rank by annual percentage yield (APY) rather than the nominal interest rate, because APY already accounts for how often interest compounds — that is the number that determines what you actually earn.
What the minimum deposit column means
Two different minimums matter. The opening deposit is what you need to start the account; the minimum balance to earn APY is what you must keep in it to receive the advertised rate. Where they differ, we filter on the opening deposit and note the balance requirement in the account detail.
Rate changes
Savings rates are variable and the institution can change them at any time. The arrow beside each APY shows the movement in basis points since our previous recorded value, so a falling rate is visible before you open an account.
